Ghosts of Geisha Past

When I talk to her about her cultural ancestors, she lets her head tilt to one side and I can see her slipping into a reverent trance. Her face transforms, reflecting the complicated emotions invoked by thinking about their lives.
She tries to reconcile the esteem in which they were held with the torture and discipline, the giving over of hopes and dreams to a life of service. Envied by many for their grace and skill, their glamorous lifestyle - were they despised by wives?
She temporarily inhabits their bodies and reappears a ghost. The white white of the skin. The black black of the hair. The red red of the lips. The solemnity is what I capture before she comes back to me, bright and shiny and very much independent, modern.
