The World Turned Upside Down By Gabriela Thiecke
Dimensions: 52x42 cm
Medium: Coloured Pencil

I drew this emu grooming itself as a symbol for the difficult Covid period when everything we had taken for granted was turned upside down.

To me the emu, with its tall, upright stance, represents resilience, pride and survival of even the most challenging times.

In the mythology and culture of Australia’s indigenous Aboriginal populations the emu is regarded as the creator spirit, for when the Milky Way is visible over the Australian bushland, the Aboriginal people have often referred to its shape as the “Emu in the Sky.”
