Trawling Darkness Seeking light By Sarah Bricknell

Trawling darkness seeking light, began with the investigation of the opposing phenomenon’s of darkness and light. My initial exploration was focused on my immediate surroundings such as pockets of light within a night sky and the presence of shadows on a sunny day. But, as the work developed from an initially simple foundational monoprint and layers of pencil, watercolour and acrylic were added, I began to ponder about other ideas of darkness and light. I found myself considering my internal world, particularly emotional consciousness and those moments of darkness that I, as all humans do, occasionally experience. As I continued to add layers, I mentally allowed myself to meet that darkness/shadow that is ever present, to understand it and to portray what I felt visually. As I worked, I sat with it and thought about those moments it dominated my emotional landscape, and how it was a struggle at times to find my inner light. My focus turned to how for me it felt light a dark murky net with mere glimmers of light seeping through, and I added flourishes of collage on parts of the work creating netlike structures that surrounded the tubular light forms and minute light drops. In creating this triptych, I have come to understand the beauty of darkness and that even though it seems like there is an absence of light, it is in fact ever present, though at times a little harder to see and one must trawl through the darkness to discover it.
