Small Sacrifice By Eira-shay Barker-hart
Dimensions: 45x85 cm
Medium: Oil, Charcoal and carving on wood

If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound?

It echoes with the same resonance as a brave heart breaking.

I created this painting during a time when my heart was breaking. My mother was losing her mind to mental illness, and I felt powerless to save her. The girl in the painting represents my inner child, standing bravely to protect the fawn, which symbolizes my mother in her vulnerable mental state. The girl's chest bursts open, spilling into the woods around her. She stands calmly in a clearing as her world shatters around her. This painting signifies the death of the inner child and the rise of an adult woman. It is a testament to the brave little girl who did everything she could to protect her mother and how she learned to navigate the pain of losing her.
