| “Where the Sky Breaks Open” is a meditation on hope in the midst of despair. The storm clouds above the eye symbolize the heaviness of emotion—grief, anxiety, uncertainty—but beneath them, the eye remains open, watching, feeling, surviving. A single tear falls, not in defeat, but as release.
The colours that bleed and bloom around the storm represent resilience: how beauty and brightness find their way through cracks in sorrow. The golden lines in the iris reflect the fragile thread of hope we carry even in our darkest hours.
This piece is about learning to sit with the storm, while still seeking the light. It is about the kind of hope that is quiet but unyielding—the kind that survives.
As an emerging artist, I use watercolour’s softness and chaos to explore emotional truth. In this work, I wanted to honour the complexity of struggle, while gently reminding the viewer that the sky always breaks open eventually—and when it does, colour returns. |
