| Jan Murphy, an abstract artist, printmaker and photographer, uses a variety of surfaces and mediums. Jan enjoys the physicality of combining textured background of mediums, collage or thick acrylic paint making scrapes or splashes randomly across the surface. Jan references her photographs then extracts and digitally manipulates the images as a starting point for her artwork. Choices of colour, tools and surface layering, is tested before marks are made to the surface. Jan begins with one colour and a large brush for initial sweeping marks for the composition to convey her positivity, energy, movement and vibrancy.
Jan’s contemporary paintings show the fun and humour of life. She brings interesting surprises and features depicting shapes alluding to land and or water, a reflection of places she has visited. By embracing the elements of colour, movement and boldness, Jan encourages viewers to reflect on the interplay between memory, experience, and our natural environment. Jan’s award-winning abstract painting exhibited in Mary Valley Arts Festival 2024 indicates the advances she is making in her art.
