My Profile

Tia Richards

Tia Richards is a Wiradjuri artist whose mob is from Narrandera, New South Wales. She was born and raised in Magandjin and comes from a long line of artists and activists. Her journey as a painter began in 1999 while incarcerated in Boggo Road Women’s Prison, where art became a means of survival—an escape from the harsh realities of imprisonment. It was a Kabi Kabi woman who first placed a paintbrush in her hand, sparking a lifelong connection to storytelling through art.
For Tia, painting is her calm place, a space where she can process life’s experiences and honour the people and places that have shaped her. Drawing on traditional Aboriginal symbology and intricate dot work, her art tells powerful stories of strength and survival. Her work is deeply personal, yet it speaks to broader histories of dispossession, resistance, and the enduring spirit of all First Nations people.
Through her art, Tia continues the legacy of those who came before her—using creativity as both a form of expression and a statement of sovereignty.
