| Sarah Bricknell, (Saan) born in in Brisbane Queensland, is an abstractionist based in Melbourne who works predominantly with oils. After graduating from Queensland University of Technology in 1999 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts Honours 2A, Sarah spent five years working in the arts at the Queensland Art Gallery while continuing to make art, having participated in numerous exhibitions since beginning her art training in 1995, including a solo exhibition “Abstractions of Emotion” in 2007 with Bayside City Council’s Artrium exhibition space.
Saan explores the reality of memory contained within the cellular structures of the body and uses both printmaking and painting techniques in her work, which is a richly layered manipulation of colourful textures and washes. The resulting images reveal Saan’s interpretation of the spaces between the inner and outer realities, and the created surfaces mimic the cell like structures of pathology specimens. Although most of her work is abstract in nature, she does do figurative pieces as well although often adds flourishes of pattern as an unexpected twist.
