| Send Email Luke Brohman (he/him) was born, lives, and works in Meanjin (so-called Brisbane) in the sovereign, stolen lands of the Yuggerah, Jagera, and Turrbal Peoples. He is descended from German, Irish, and British peoples.
Situated in the dynamic and ever-shifting crossroads of queerness, primordial archetype, mythos, and magic, Luke weaves an art practice that enquires into core questions and realities surrounding love, truth, beauty…
Luke has taught animation since 2013 and an appreciation for this digital form of art-making fuses with film and photography. “My love for film led into photography, which in turn led into graphic design/digital design…” About animation, Luke says “I wanted to study a field that touched on all the artistic disciplines - drawing, visualising concepts, character and environment design, and story-telling…”
Through photography and graphic design freelancing Luke has also played crucial roles in producing multivalent creative projects engaging other artists, thinkers, provocateurs. Luke’s work in revealing, conjuring wildness from within ‘the mundane, the modern, the domesticated’ elucidates a desire to pour feral queerness through the cracks in the edifice of whiteness.
Dramatic elemental landscapes formed of fusion and lucid calamity - roaring ocean waves, lightning-filled sky… - and a love of figures and faces embodying the secret histories and postures of the Mysteries often form Luke’s subject matter. A focus on lighting, and the bold use of colour and saturation to depict a scene becomes for Luke a discipline bordering on obsession.
